dc.description.abstractThe problem of poor solid waste management in most cities has increasingly caused a great challenge to the residents of these places and the country at large , it is mostly increasing in high density residential areas where the population of low income earners is increasing daily and in kampala its evident in slums like katanga, Bwaise, Kalerwe among others . The researcher used different methods to acquire data from the field which included Interviews methode , Questionnaire technique, Observation method, Photography, Secondary data sourcing, Editing data, Data analysis, simple random sampling and purposive sampling. The main finding of the reaserch were based on the stated objectives and these include types and composition of solid wastes in katanga slum, and the major types of solid wastes found out were bio degradable and non-bio degradable wastes. The plot sizes in relation to plot coverage by houses in katanga slum and it was found out that most plots are not t standard with the plot coverage also exceeding the standard plot coverage size of 50% ways in which solid waste is managed in katanga slum. Solid waste in katanga is managed in three steps that‟s is storage, collection and disposal. In Conclusion In order to solve problems related to poor waste management and improve on the situation not only in katanga but also in Kampala as a city in general and Uganda‟s urban centers the local government should turn to strategies of incorporating more private enterprises into the system in relation to the solid waste management and draw in local communities so as to make the process of managing waste as effective as possible for it is there communities that are living with the poor related to poor waste management and also contribute to the generation of solid waste in the communities. Recommendations for future action to establish sound management of solid waste. The residents would also like to increase on the number of times the KCCA truck collects waste from there area since it only comes twice a week yet the amount of waste is too much for just the two days. Sensitization of the community about the challenges of poor solid waste management to the people of Katanga and its negative impacts to their lives in order to discourage poor solid waste management in the region and therefore help to improve on their health standardsen_US
