Abstract
The objective of this study was to examine factors affecting women participation in savings and credit cooperative organization in Buyanja subcounty Rukungiri district. Primary data was obtained from respondents in Buyanja subcounty Rukungiri district. This quantitative cross-sectional study involved distribution of 152 sets of questionnaires to respondents who were self-employed and informal sector workers. Univariate analysis, cross tabulations and multi nominal logistic regression were performed on the variables in the study using STATA.
The study found that the average age was about 36 years and age had a significant impact towards SACCO participation. A unit increase in age in a woman’s age increases the odds of participation in a SACCO by 6%.
There is need for sensitization and education of masses on various aspects within the savings benefits, and this knowledge will instill some confidence within Ugandans so that they can save for their retirement in the available SACCOs. Government should encourage creation of SACCOs in order to reduce the distance people travel.
