An Investigation into the functionality of the Wandegeya Market
Abstract
Currently, in Uganda, the government is making efforts to develop the traditional markets within
the different municipalities by building new modern market buildings through the Markets and
Trade Improvement Programme (MATIP). However, the new MATIP markets don’t meet the
needs of their users so, they are largely abandoned by both the vendors and customers. They are not
being used as envisaged. This is further compounded by the fact some of the crucial needs of the
users aren’t put into consideration while designing the new modern market structures in Uganda.
This research aimed at acquiring information that would ensure architectural design can be
employed as a tool to aid in the planning for the new modern markets that are to be constructed to
replace the untidy traditional markets that do not meet users’ needs. This study has to potentially
provide an understanding of how we can design effective functional markets to meet the needs of
the users while promoting the vibrancy of the market experience. Through this study, we may be
able to engage various stakeholders and rally for a collective effort to manage this transition. The
research takes place at a time when planning bodies and different architects are trying hard to
figure out the best way to design and plan for the new modern markets. A qualitative approach
was taken to collect the necessary data and information including the use of direct observation,
photography, literature review, analysis, and use of open-ended interviews. Previous literature on
concepts and theories surrounding the research topic were analyzed and this gave rise to a
conceptual framework that was vital in understanding how facets of architectural design can be
used to aid the planning and design of modern markets. The research categorized the main
architectural and planning concepts under location, accessibility, aesthetics, Spatial quality, safety,
tenant mix, social interactions, catch basins, flexibility of stores, and number of floors.
Recommendations for design under those concepts were provided in the conclusion chapter and
the guidelines suggested can be utilized in the creation of functional modern markets.
