Examining the effective use of literary devices employed in the songs performed during twin initiation ceremonies a among the Baganda.

Abstract

The study examines the effective use of literary devices employed in the Baganda twin songs. The twin songs amongst the Baganda are no longer dominant since people take the celebration of twins traditionally as evil and they celebrate them in a religious manner. According to the Baganda traditions, twins are unique children who call for a special celebration that involves rituals and singing. This research aims at identifying the different literary devices employed in the songs performed during the twin ceremonies and the effectiveness they hold in these songs. The data in this report has been attained through interviewing particular members in society, focus group discussions so as to get the most authentic information about the ceremony. Cloze reading of the lyrics while creating a reference to the previous setting so as to draw out these devices and analyze their meaning. I urge a more expounded research to be done on different aspects of this ceremony and to use more efficient equipment to capture the original performed ceremony so as the ceremony stays in existence for the next coming years. As captured in my analysis, the songs performed during the twin initiation ceremony not only provided entertainment but also communicated a lot. The findings of the study highlights the literary devices employed in the twin songs, how they are perceived by the society and what they actually are considering the drastic changes in the ceremony.
