The current method of recovering lost university identification cards at Makerere University is both ineffective and tiresome for any student who has misplaced their card. These IDs are lost due to the negligence of some students who leave their property anywhere and also rampant theft of student property at the university. The victims fail to access university services such as medication at the university hospital, main library and to a greater extent, some even fail to do their exams.
When IDs are found, they are picked by students and placed at different receptions such as halls of residence and colleges around the university. This makes it difficult for a student to recover their ID because they have no information of where it can be found.
The main objective of this project was to develop an online ID recovery system for Makerere University to help students recover their lost ID. This involved identifying requirements for the system and carrying out system design in order to develop an architectural design and also define data that will flow throughout the system.
The system was implemented using four stages of the waterfall model which included requirements gathering and analysis, system design, system implementation, and testing. This method was used due to its ease of use and specificity of deliverables after every stage.
The final product was an online ID Recovery system where students who have lost their IDs will just have to log on to the system, do a search of their ID using a photo of their own. If the ID has been uploaded, they will receive a message with the exact location of the ID and this could be any noticeboard or other places around the university.
