Investigating possible strategies for implementation of building information modelling in Uganda's construction industry
Abstract
This study explores the potential opportunities and challenges associated with implementing BIM. The study further focuses on examining the possible strategies for implementing BIM technology in Uganda’s Construction industry. BIM is a digital technology enabling the creation and management of building information throughout its lifecycle. BIM has demonstrated remarkable success in improving productivity, reducing costs, and enhancing construction project quality in developed countries.
The findings of the study point out several opportunities associated with implement BIM. The major opportunities discussed include: Improved Collaboration and Communication on construction projects, Improved Design Quality, Improved Lifecycle Management of the project and Improved Cost and Time Savings.
However, the implementation of this technology was found to be significantly hindered by several challenges which majorly include: Lack of Sufficient Training opportunities and technical support, Limited awareness and understanding, High cost of the software and hardware and inadequately trained workforce to enhance its utilization.
Furthermore, the study discusses a number of strategies that can promote the implementation of BIM technology. For the Ugandan construction industry, seven main strategies were identified and included in the survey to investigate their applicability in the construction industry. This was premised on the opinions of construction 139 construction professionals that responded to the survey. Stakeholder Engagement, Training and Education through existing Educational Institutions were the top two recommended strategies for effective implementation of BIM in the industry. Others strategies that were investigated included: Setting Clear Objectives for Implementing BIM, Use of Pilot Projects, Continuous Improvement and Evaluation and Establishing Building Information Modelling Standards and Protocols.
