This chapter explains various key words included in the background of the study in details. They include painting, origin of painting, some examples of oldest paintings, painting in Africa, Uganda an MTSIFA, the materials mostly used an their prices. Painting A painting is an image (artwork) created using pigments (color) on a surface (ground) such as paper or canvas. According to James Milner Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, colour or other medium to a solid surface (support base). The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. The final work is also called a painting. According to Jacob Ingson Origin of painting Painting dates back as early as the Cro-Magnon man existed. These used cave walls as their canvases and durable antler and ivory, not wood and skins as their palettes. The most frequently painted subjects were animals, pictured in brown, red, yellows and blacks from pigments available to the Stone Age artists. The animals were the game for both Cro-Magnon hunters looked reindeer, bison, cattle, deer and horses. The oldest of the Cro-Magnon caves art, Chauvet in France, was painted 33000 years ago and exhibited as advanced an artistic capacity as any of the later caves. The some of the oldest paintings in the world include; The Ancient Egyptians are well known for their art, especially those that cover the walls of tombs. This art to help the person make an easy transition into the afterlife. This piece, which comes from the Painted Tomb at Hierakonpolis, dates back to the pre-dynastic period of Egyptian history, 1,000 years before famous leaders like Tutankhamen and Nefertiti existed. Dancing Woman from Knossos, 1600 BCE The earliest Greek painting actually comes from the Minoans, who were well known for their pottery skills and painted pottery. This example dates back to about 1600 BCE, and the detail on this pot is amazing. The artist, who is also unknown, might not have known her at all. What we do know is that she is dressed in a traditional Minoan garb, and her hair is in the typical Minoan style. The oldest date given to an animal cave painting is now a bull dated circa as over 40 000 years, at Lubang Jeriji Saléh cave, East Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia. Before this discovery, the oldest known cave painting was a depiction of a pig with a minimum age of 35,400 years, at Timpuseng cave in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Altamira Cave, 35,600 years ago In northern Spain, discovered within the 19th century, the Altamira Cave was the original cave where prehistoric paintings were found. Human figures and wild animals dominate this rock art, and are integrated into complex sceneries that involve supernatural beings, hunting, dancing, skirmishing, and sexual activity. Artists depicted these animals which roamed the ancient brushwood forest area: armadillo, red deer, jaguar, capivara, tapir, lizard, and among others The Lascaux Caves, given the nickname “prehistoric Sistine Chapel”, are a cave complex inside SW France adorned with the most famous and impressive cave paintings worldwide. These cave paintings are estimated to be around 17,000 years old. Many of the paintings are located far away from the entrance and have to have been made with the help of candles.en_US
