The purpose of this project is to develop a greenhouse monitoring and control system based on the Internet of things, and make this information available and accessible anywhere in the world. With the increase in population and urbanization, there is an increased demand for food, yet the change in climatic conditions has greatly affected crop production that would meet this demand. Greenhouses have therefore been introduced to provide optimum growing conditions for plants even when the weather is not favorable, but without an automated monitoring and control system, it is not possible to provide optimum conditions.
The technology behind this project is the Internet of Things, which is the interconnection via the internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data. The system monitors and controls the internal weather conditions, that is, temperature, moisture, humidity, and light intensity in the greenhouse, and passes this information to a database that is then visible on a web page anywhere in the world.
This system will enable farmers to grow crops all-year round under optimum conditions therefore increasing the amount of food produced to meet the ever increasing population, urbanization, and climate change.
